Dreams Never End

The optimistic pessimist

For The Kindness of Strangers

Today’s blogging challenge was suppose to be about my favorite vacation.  But I alas, while Skyping my daughter, who is studying abroad in Buenos Aires, Argentina, I decided I needed to write about some of her adventure instead!

She has been abroad for two weeks getting used to Buenos Aires and her roommate. This past weekend she took a 12 hour bus ride to a lovely place called Mendoza.  Although she speaks Spanish pretty well, she had a bit of trouble when there was an issue with her travel arrangements and she ended up separated from her travel companions.  But for the kindness of strangers, first in the form of an elderly woman who asked if she was okay. And later a guy who spoke English fluently and gave her some advice on where to avoid and what to see while in Mendoza. They both told her that she should be entitled to get some of her bus money back because of the mistake and helped her at the station with filing a claim.

Eventually she met back up with her travel mates.  They enjoyed touring some vineyards, and hiking in the Andes Mountains.  The scenery is beautiful there and there’s beauty in the people as well.

Having your offspring so far away is off-putting to say the least.  With a language barrier, unfamiliar countryside and some botched plans, this could have been a recipe for disaster. But knowing that there are good, caring people all across this big world of ours, is encouraging. A bit of my confidence in mankind has been restored.

 Mendoza, Argentina

Boy, don’t you wish you were here?  Unless you are of course!

What’s In Your Bag/Wallet?

One could only imagine what sorts of things I have stowed away in this purse. The bag itself, a Christmas gift from my brother.  The two animal decorations? The raccoon is a hand sanitizer holder, the panda, a lip gloss holder!  Shout out to Bath and Bodyworks for these cute accessories!

Snapchat-9040063154161055894

And now for the goods……

Snapchat-5114372010810522605

In no particular order –

  • Four pens, three black and one breast cancer awareness pink. I can’t use them all at once but let’s hope one of them will work when the time comes.
  • Okay this may be more than excessive but one lip pencil, three lipsticks and two lip glosses. Well, “on a bad day there is always lipstick”. Three chap sticks and one homemade pot of lip balm are also included. One might think I should carry a small side pack just to house the lip items! (shaking my head)
  • I have one eyeliner and one cover stick as well, I guess I know how my eyes and face measure up against my lip care.
  • One mirrored compact, so I can see to put all that lip stick on, you don’t want a mistake, when it comes to lipstick application!
  • Two pocket size hand creams. A hair pick.
  • There are two packs of gum one Dentyne Ice peppermint and one Extra bubble gum, both sugarless. And one pack of Listerine breath strips for the days when gum won’t cut it.
  • In the drug and medical area I have one large bottle of Advil for really big headache days, one Zyrtec for allergy days, one bottle of eye drops for the “I was up too late writing my blog” days, one tube of neosporin for the “oh drat, I just cut myself” days and one tamoxifen tablet for the “oh drat, I am at work and forgot to take my cancer therapy drug before I left!
  • My billfold, sunglasses, reading glasses and car keys.  I can’t think of anything that interesting here except I have a rhinestone lanyard for my keys in hopes of not misplacing them.  However, I had lost them the other morning and they were actually in the ignition yes, all night.  This is really helpful if you intend to have your car stolen by the local night prowler.  Not so great when you are running late and are crazed trying to find your keys!
  • The papers I have are a hotel receipt from a few weeks back when my oldest daughter headed off to Argentina to study abroad.  I also have a metro ticket stub from the bus/train ride we took to the airport.  And a restaurant receipt from TGIF’s from the dinner we had the night before she flew out.
  • That pretzel card thing is some kind of app you can get from The Pretzelmaker,  a chain of mall stores that well, make pretzels.  I don’t know why I would need the app.  And now as I am remembering they shorted us one pretzel when we were there last time.
  • And finally, I have a thank you note scribbled on some torn notebook paper from one of the students I work with that reads as written:

Thank you so much your the nicest person that I’ve ever met hope u have a wonderful Christmas. Your always there for me your just about the only one I always listen to and trust of course.

Thank you so much

A sweet note to reread on crazy days at school.

I have since moved the thoughtful note to my keepsake journal, along with the metro stub.  I should downsize that lip stick assortment but for now put everything neatly back in the bag.

A very good way to clean out my bag and discover some finds too.  It was my ninth blog post theme.  I wonder what is in your bag or wallet? Care to share?

Cheers,

Five Current Goals

This will have to be written at top speed for it is late. I have been baking Valentine cookies all day and suddenly it is nearly bedtime, but I don’t want to miss one of my 30 day blogging challenges.  Thank goodness it basically is a list again today!

5 Goals

  • I have started to tidy and unclutter my home using the Konmari technique.  The principles in the book, “the life-changing magic of tidying up” by Marie Kondo are what I am following and it should take me about six months to complete the tidying and simplifying . This will be a blog topic in the future.
  • In 2016, I would like to complete four 5k’s and a 10k as well.  I had surgery at the end of 2015 and have yet to get back to running.  I plan to hit the road by the end of February.  Hoping I can condition up fairly quickly, since I was able to run right up until the day of surgery.
  • During the summer I will find a job.  I work in the public school system which really is great but when summer comes it is tough on the pocketbook to say the least.  So I will find something to fill the gap in paychecks.
  • I would love to take some online courses through our local college and be that lifelong learner.
  • Continuing to write in my blog long after my 30 day challenge is over. I would like to possibly start another blog as well. In it I would write reviews about random items that I might find at the store to test and critique.

Okay, well there you have it folks, my quickest entry ever!  And it isn’t very fancy either. I think I better throw in a picture to pep it up a bit!  And then I must sleep because middle schoolers wait for no one. And they will be there tomorrow with their nonstop energy.  I will blog about working at a middle school one day as well.

Cheers! JustLorelei67

My Five Favorite Songs

Music Doodle

Day seven of the blogging challenge, and it is a challenge in that I do not have five favorite songs. Really I love music it is a wonderful highlight to the day, has been meaningful throughout my life and can evoke great happiness or sadness in me.  But my “playlist” is ever changing and although I enjoy hearing music I’ve enjoyed in my past I really just enjoy embracing whatever it is that I am hearing as of late.  My tastes are eclectic and I love hearing new stuff.  Instead of my very favorite songs of all time here are five songs I have on my current playlist! I guess it is my blog I can do it my way.  These songs are included on the playlist I have called, Chill.

  1. “Help Me Lose My Mind [featuring London Grammar] ” from Disclosure’s Settle
  2. “Pickled Spider” from Mr. Scruff’s Turntables On The Hudson Reflecting Cielo vol. 8
  3.  “Alfonso Muskedunder” from Todd Terje’s It’s Album Time
  4. “Get A Move On!” from Mr. Scruff’s Keep It Unreal
  5. “Que Sera” from Wax Tailor’s Tales Of Forgotten Melodies

I am not going to post a link to each song but will leave you with this one that is number five!  Enjoy!

I would love to hear some song suggestions from you!

What Am I Afraid Of?

Today is the sixth day of my 30 day blogging challenge.  I wondered all week what I might write about for today’s topic.  Suddenly it became crystal clear as the day arrived.

My daughter is a junior in college and chose to study abroad this semester in Buenos Aires, Argentina.  As exciting as that is for her well, as her mom, it is a bit daunting having her 7,000 miles away for home!  She has been gone for about two weeks and I have been trying to get used to the idea.  The pictures she has sent are beautiful and she is having a grand time.

A couple of days ago she informed me she was traveling by bus to Mendoza, Argentina to do some sightseeing and wine tasting.  There were ten students who planned to go together on the bus, but somehow my daughter ended up on a different bus, at a different time, then everyone else.  A twelve hour bus ride in an unfamiliar country, alone?  An adventure?  Yes, no doubt.  But a restful, sleep inducing night for a mom?  Not so much.

It wasn’t until last evening that she told me she was on the bus all alone and hoped to meet her friends, once she got there.  It definitely sparked anxiety in me and I truly felt afraid and slept very little over the night wondering if she arrived. Thankfully she has some excellent Spanish skills, so I knew she had that on her side.

So often I have felt afraid for my children.  You are afraid for their safety at a young age so you buy things to baby proof your home.  You are afraid whether or not they are making their developmental milestones on time.  You are afraid when they go off to school whether or not they will make the grade.  You are afraid whether or not they will be accepted by their peers and make friends.  You are afraid about those “bad” decisions they might make in order to learn a life lesson. A life lesson that you would prefer they learn by you offering your advice.  You are afraid when they spread their wings and fly away.  These are fears that come from living.  When you have lived long enough, you understand a little more about the calamities that could befall you in life. Being afraid for your child, I suppose, is just part of parenting.

Today, I was afraid for my daughters safety, as she traversed a new country alone on a 12 hour bus ride. As the day and then evening dragged on I decided to look at some images of Mendoza. I will include some for your viewing pleasure.  It is an incredible looking place. She is so fortunate to have such an opportunity.  After about 15 silent hours, I got one quick Snap Chat, letting me know she had arrived and was well, my fear lessened. It didn’t go away but it lessened.  It will be alright.  It will be an experience she will never forget.  I am not so afraid for now.

Mendoza, Argentina what a beautiful place!

Cheers,  JustLorelei67

A Proud Moment

I have been a runner for many years but it wasn’t until after my breast cancer diagnosis and a year and a half of surgeries that I had a goal to have a PR road race. There’s a race that involves running through the freeway tunnels in my city, called the Tunnel 10K.  In the past I have run a few half marathons, but am most confidant running 5k races.  The 10K (six miles) seemed like a good goal.  With two and half months before the September 19 race,  I trained six days a week, kept a pretty strict diet and worked on getting my mile pace to something acceptable.

When race day arrived I felt nervous, just like every race I questioned my decision to run a race.  This always happens to me.  I think “what am I nuts? I could be home in my cozy bed, sleeping in on a Saturday morning.  Why am I here running?  I can’t do this.”

Then as I stood waiting for the race to start I pictured myself running, reminding myself that I had trained more than ever before.  This was going to be a good race I decided and started hoping that I might even get not only a PR but could actually be a contender for a medal!

The gun went off and I was on my way.  As I ran I thought of the days after my diagnosis how I wondered if I would ever run again.  I thought about when I was recovering from my mastectomy, wondering if I would ever run again.  The miles ticked by and before I knew it I was crossing the finish line.  It was a good time, I felt ecstatic, a PR for me too! I felt accomplished and alive! (that is what running does for me). When my name was called, at the medal ceremony (I got second place in my age category) I felt proud of setting a goal and exceeding it! A good day, a very good day indeed.

What Is Your Dream Job?

I analyze everything!  If you’re telling me a story about your lunch date I will ask what you and they were wearing, what restaurant, where you sat, what you were eating and any other seemingly random question.  None of which will have one iota to do with the fact that you are now in a serious, committed relationship and you are trying to tell me your next move.  But I just love visualizing the “whole picture”.  Being able to put myself in someone else’s shoes is of the utmost importance to me and I like the stage set to partake in it.

Therefore my dream job (drum roll) /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\  Private Investigator of course!

I can imagine working the case, asking the questions and analyzing the data. This would be a most perfect job for me!

______________________________________________________

This is day four of my blogging challenge.  I don’t think I would have picked this topic to write about, but I want to follow the 30 days as they’ve been liste.  I am inspired to come up with a list of things that I do want to blog about when my challenge is over. And that is pretty exciting!

If you want to share your “dream job” with me leave it in the comments below!

My mother taught me early on that this was the most important lesson in life to follow.  I have tried to follow it in my life and also taught my children “The Golden Rule”.

What are your favorite quotes or sayings?

Dreams Never End Inspiration

Dreams Never End was inspired by a small book bag I have just put into use.  I like the saying and the picture is quite cute.  I pondered on the statement Dreams Never End and I think that it fits me.

Throughout my life I have never completely closed the door on any of my ambitions.  Now at my age [.] maybe I will never be a famous actor or go into space, but maybe I will. I can picture myself in either role.  And if I can picture myself, well I’m already halfway there.

So why not dream?  It doesn’t mean I sit around waiting for something to come to me, nor do I expect not to work toward my pertinent goals.  But it is fun to picture myself accepting Oscar, or being interviewed on the Tonight Show, traveling the world, curing cancer, being POTUS or even writing the perfect blog.  So many possibilities, I will remain hopeful that “the world is my oyster” and continue to dream.

As far as being an optimistic pessimist?  I realize these words are a dichotomy yet they both fit me well.  I think this will be a future topic!

Here is that cute book bag:
